Best Position of Intercourse During Pregnancy

Many women believe sex is strictly prohibited during pregnancy, but it’s not the case actually. You can have sex during pregnancy if everything else is going fine. If you do not have a history of preterm labor or miscarriage, you can have sex as often as you like even when you are pregnant.

The only thing is that certain positions just won’t work during pregnancy. You can try most positions in the first trimester but from the second trimester on, you have to look out for the extra weight and baby inside.  For instance, you will have to look for a different position than your old favorite missionary position. You can try the following options though.

1.  Spooning is one effective position of intercourse during pregnancy. You have to lie side by side with your partner right behind you. This allows for more shallow penetration.

2. Reverse spooning may also work great. In this variation, you have to be on your sides, facing each other.

3. You can be on top of your partner because this puts you in control and allows you to decide the speed and depth of penetration.

4.  Having sex in a regular doggy position will work great. Your partner can also penetrate quite deep in this position. If that feels uncomfortable, tell your partner about your feelings. You can also keep a pillow between your bottom and his lower tummy to keep him from pushing too for in.

5.  Sit down while having sex to take pressure off your uterus. You can sit on your partner’s lap and control the depth and rare of penetration.

6.  Reverse cowgirl is another favorable position of intercourse during pregnancy. You have to straddle your partner who will by lying on his back. Keep knees on either side of his hips with your face towards his feet. You can even squat over him to make it even more comfortable. While thrusting, be sure to use your hands to position yourself nicely. Steady yourself by using your hands.

7.  You can make use of the edge of the bed with your knees bent. Place your feet on the edge and ask your partner to penetrate while standing. Do not lie down but use your hands to keep upper body propped if you feel lying down is making you uncomfortable. This is a variation of missionary style but saves you from dealing with your partner’s body weight.

8.  Take it to your living room. Kneel on a couch while making sure that your belly is at the back of the couch. Use your arms for support while your partner penetrates from behind.

9.  Enjoy sex in a standing position. Simply, lean over a low table or counter with your partner standing right behind you. Let him stimulate your clitoris while entering your vagina from behind. To take pressure off your pelvis, you can simply sit on a counter with your partner standing in front of you. Wrap your legs around his waist while he penetrates your vagina. You can even pop a cushion under your hips to get in a more comfortable position. You can even consider leaning back a bit, especially if you are in your third trimester and have a large bump.

Note: Wear Condom to Avoid Infection

It is a good idea to wear a condom when having sex during pregnancy because there is always a greater risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections that can affect your pregnancy and your baby’s health. Ask him to wear a condom if he is active outside of your relationship or you choose to have sex with someone else during pregnancy. Do not have sex with your partner if he has been diagnosed with any sexually transmitted infections.

Position of Intercourse During Pregnancy: What to Watch Out For?

What it means is that you can always have sex during pregnancy if everything else is progressing normally. However, you should take care of few things when having sex during pregnancy. For instance:

  • Do not lie flat on your back to have sex in the regular missionary position, especially after you are four months pregnant.
  • You may experience some bleeding when having sex during the first trimester. The blood flow to your uterus increases during pregnancy, and vaginal intercourse may irritate some of the capillaries that will result in bleeding. Talk to your doctor if bleeding is quite heavy.
  • Do not worry about hurting your baby during sex because your cervix and the amniotic fluid will always protect your baby. The only precaution is to keep your partner from blowing air into your vagina because this can cause an air bubble during pregnancy that may block a blood vessel.
  • You can have both oral and anal sex during pregnancy. Anal sex can be a bit uncomfortable during pregnancy, especially when you develop hemorrhoids. Avoid having vaginal sex soon after having anal sex. This can lead to infections.

When Should You Worry?

By keeping these points in mind, you can have sex without having to worry about anything. However, you should not ignore your doctor’s advice if they ask you to not have sex during pregnancy. They might recommend avoiding sex if:

  • You’re leaking amniotic fluid
  • You have heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Your placenta covers your cervical opening
  • You have cervical incompetence
  • You have a history of premature birth or you’re carrying multiples
